I am pleased to say that the team have kicked off the year with lots of hard work and plenty of enthusiasm. With great progress being made and many designs nearing completion, our aspiration to build our first ever car is gradually becoming a reality! Now fully integrated into the Dynamics Lab we have been able to utilise the space with the old and new chassis’ being moved there and the addition of a bolt cabinet. Developments have included the reassembly of an old suspension design as a learning exercise for our new members and finalising the design of the backplate which is being prototyped in MDF as I write this, with the threaded inserts for it being made over the coming days. With regards to progress made by the electrical team, we are in the final stages of preparation that will allow us to make the first segment of our battery. Lots of members of the team have also undertaken various training, including drill training, lathe and milling machine training and members of the body work team have also recently been trained to use the diamond cutter.
In other news we have also taken a number of day trips within the last couple of weeks, the first being to LLandow Karting Circuit for a test day organised by the current Formula Student champions, Cardiff Racing. It was a fantastic opportunity to ask lots of questions and to see how other teams operate on a test day. Everyone that attended learnt lots and came away more determined than ever to build our car. The team were also invited to visit our friends, and hopefully soon to be rivals, at the University of the West of England. Members of our team spent a great afternoon nosing around their facilities which included the chance to see their car in the wind tunnel.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our newest partner, HBM, for the eDrive system they provided us with to help with our electrical test rig set up over the coming weeks. We are delighted that they are on board, as along with our other partners we realise that we could not build a car without them.
Finally, I would like to point everyone in the direction of the latest addition to our website, an acronym buster, which can be found at https://www.beracing.co.uk/acronyms. I am sure this will be extremely useful in the coming months for not only our team but the wider Formula Student community.
That’s all from me for now but I will keep you updated with our progress over the coming months.
